Permalink problem

Hi I am trying to create a customized permalink for my website. I click on appreance>permalinks. All the way bottom I put in the customized area like home-page.I clicked on save. But any page I am creating the permali9nk is coming as like homep-page-2, contact-us-2 or 3 etc. Is there any way I can fix it. I do not want the numbers. I checked, there are no double pages or two pages in the same name. Can anyone help me. Thanks in advance for your help.
