# Permalink Structure

 * I CANNOT get a new permalink structure of ANY KIND to work without getting 404’
   s straight away. I’m still using v1.5… is there something I am missing? I keep
   seeing something about a .htaccess file being used? Do I need one? How do I create
   it? Where do I put it? Why will it help?

 * `Do I need one?` – yes, if you are using apache.
    `How do I create it?` – it 
   should be automatically created/updated for you when you change the permalink
   structure. `Why will it help?` – it tells apache how to translate the permalink
   into a valid request.

 * Does your hosting provider allow to use `.htaccess` files and do they provide
   the use of `mod_rewrite` ?
