 * If I change my Permalink Structure to Date and name based ([http://mysite.com/index.php/2006/09/27/sample-post/](http://mysite.com/index.php/2006/09/27/sample-post/))
   from Default ([http://mysite.com/?p=123](http://mysite.com/?p=123)) will all
previous posts be recreated in the new permalink structure, stay in the default
format, or be broken and unable to be reached unless i change the link structure
   back?

 * 1. No post will be re-created. You always have your posts in the database.
    2.
No matter what permalink structure you have – the default is always working!
   3. Think well before you change because from one custom to another custom will
not work, i.e. if you have example.com/123/post (where 123 is post ID#) and you
change to date and name… the links will be broken.

 * Thanks, I’m somewhat of a wordpress noob, so I’ll leave it and avoid any mishaps,
thanks for the quick response, much appreciated.

 * moshu, I don’t think that’s the case any more. I just changed one of my blogs
from a custom year/month/name setup to custom year/month/archives, and it worked
just fine. Then I changed it to year/month, still worked fine. Changed it back
to the original, posts working fine.

 * vkaryl, I’m sure moshu meant old links (from elsewhere) will have a problem.
So if you change to year/month/name, Google comes around and drops you in the
search engine, then 6 months later you switch to year/month/archives, there’ll
   be breakage.

 * Oh. Well, jeez. Who gives a rat’s ass about that? As long as your READERS can
find the posts, THAT’S what’s important.

 * “_As long as your READERS can find the posts_“
 * Would be hard for them to do that if you keep changing that permalink structure.`;)`

 * Why? Every permalink change I made, the title of the post when clicked still
loaded the post in its entirety. Every post displayed normally on the blog.
 * I’m obviously missing something here, not entirely unusual. Then again, what
I’m thinking is why on earth make something like permalinks bork anything to
the extent you two are indicating? That’s just stupidity.

 * Strong and opinionated language there. I give a rats arse for one. And so do
a bunch of other people I know. Does that answer your question?
 * Seriously though, incoming links, whether they’re from search engines or simply
other sites (whose owners considered your page important enough to link to in
the first place) should be taken into account when you go and do something like
   this.

 * *laughing* Yup. Strong and opinionated, that would be me. If you have a problem
with that, you don’t need to read my posts, ain’t?

 * <winking>I’d love to be able to do that but I can’t figure out how to use the
forum “block this user” or “shut this user up” feature.</winking>

 * Oy, can’t help you there, because I can’t either. *shrug* Must be one of those“
agree to disagree” things, and go on from there, hmmm?

 * I updated my permalinks today (sorry new to this and not so technical) from default
   to:
 * /%category%/%postname%/
 * firstly i would like to know if i entered the syntax correctly. basically the
idea is i’m using this as a CMS so the category and postname would mirror what
i would like to call the directories on the site.
 * that is – my blog, at blog.isayhello.net
when clicking on the sidebar link you
go to the apppropriate category (page created)
 * e.g. : blog.isayhello.net/contact, blog.isayhello.net/about, blog.isayhello.net/
   expertise
    etc.,…
 * permalinks aren’t broken, and the logo and flash movie at blog.isayhello.net
show up as soon as you are at the root of the site, however when clicking on
any of the links and going into any of the categories the flash movie and logo
   are now broken.
 * any idea why this would be happening? i apologise for my ineptness in advance.
i’ve only been messing around with wordpress for 2 days.

 * _“vkaryl, I’m sure moshu meant old links (from elsewhere) will have a problem”_
 * Yep, from elsewhere and in my case, from within my own posts. Sure, all the Titles
and sidebar archive links, that are dynamic, will update automatically. But not
all the links within my posts where I linked to another post, those would break.
   🙁
