# Permission error when updating (update-core.php)

 * When trying to update sites, I’m hitting this error:
    ———— Downloading update
   from [https://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-3.9.zip…](https://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-3.9.zip…)
 * Unpacking the update…
 * The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. 
   This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/includes/update-
   core.php
 * Installation Failed
    ————
 * This is on a CentOS 7 box with Apache & mariaDB. Currenly, apache is the group
   and the main user account is the owner. Folders are @ 775 and files are 644.
 * I’ve tested a variety of things, including testing with apache as the user, root
   as the user, the site as the user…etc. I’ve also tested setting all files/folders
   to 777 – nothing works.
 * Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

 * Check the owner of the installation folder and give 777 access for that owner.

 * Hey Raja – thanks for the response. I’ve tried that – I tested setting the owner
   and file/folder access to 777 but still get the error. Any other thoughts?
