It there such a thing as a ping command that you can just put into your browser to notifiy the search engines and blog directories of your updates?

Does Google have a certain Ping command?
    Yahoo?
    MSN?

What is the difference between doing this and just placing certain URL in wordpress? How can I find more? Some of the pings on the list I had 1/2 don’t even work?

    Look under your admin page

Then options >> Writing. At the bottom is a section called Update Services. What ever is entered there will be pinged each time you post a new entry.

This is another service that pings multple services

I’d like to start ping through my browser to let the search engines know I have updated my content.

Search engines to do not accept pings. If you read your access logs you should see that their bots visit your site anywhere between ten to a hundred times per day. That should be enough.
