There are a couple of reasons this might be happening.
1. You have an issue with WP Cron, see the FAQ for help on that: http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/plugins/backupwordpress/faq/
2. Your not getting enough traffic to your site and so WP Cron isn’t getting fired.
Definitely not #2 as we get nearly a million unique visitors a month. 🙂

I’d imagine it’s either a WP Cron issue, or maybe the cron isn’t registered properly, you could try de-activating and re-activating the plugin to see if that sorts it out.
It has started working! I removed a different backup plug-in and I’m wondering if that has been causing a conflict. In any case, seems to be fixed! Thanks for responding.
Thats great to hear. What was the other backup plugin you removed?
It was WordPress Backup to Dropbox, which never worked… it would start the daily backup but always choked on certain files.
