 * Hi There,
 * Following on from: [https://wordpress.org/support/topic/writing-to-htaccess-file-incorrectly/#post-17180857](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/writing-to-htaccess-file-incorrectly/#post-17180857)

   We’re also seeing this issue across multiple sites where the plugin duplicates
   the blocked IPs and doesn’t complete writing the rules and then the .htaccess
   blocks for WordPress are removed and the site is broken. We’ve disabled writing
   to files temporarily, but…
 * We’d like to keep our block and ban lists up to date automatically so turning
   off writing to files doesn’t seem like a good long term solution is there a fix
   in the works for this?
 * All the Best,
   Alex

 * Hi [@alexgwcog](https://wordpress.org/support/users/alexgwcog/), thank you for
   creating a new topic!
 * The block and ban lists will still be enforced even if Write to Files is turned
   OFF.
   Could you please confirm if the generated rules in Security > Tools are
   correct?
 * Looking forward to hearing from you!

 * Hi [@shanedelierrr](https://wordpress.org/support/users/shanedelierrr/),
   It was
   my understanding the banned IPs that were blocked e.g due to failed login attempts
   were also managed and added to this list so how can that be updated if write
   to files is off? Or are these blocking rules managed elsewhere?All the Best,Alex

 * Hi [@alexgwcog](https://wordpress.org/support/users/alexgwcog/), if the Write
   to Files is turned OFF, Solid Security will automatically use the PHP method
   to ban IPs. The plugin checks early on in the WordPress request cycle if the
   request is coming from a banned IP, and if so, it issues a **403** response instead
   of letting the request continue.
 * Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have other questions!
