# Plugin editor returning 404 error

 * I’m trying to edit a plugin on my site, but when I click Update File, I get a
   404 error, and the changes to the plugin are discarded. I have full admin permissions
   so that’s not the problem.

 * 404 sounds strange. is rest of your website working fine? pretty permalinks? 
   you can connect via FTP and edit plugin files too.
 * also why you need to edit a plugin file? a plugin update will wipe off all your
   changes.

 * Sorry, I misread your post. I thought that you were getting an error when trying
   to update, not edit. Regardless, you could still try to replace the edited file
   through FTP. Also, I found an article about [The Right Way to Customize a WordPress Plugin](https://iandunn.name/the-right-way-to-customize-a-wordpress-plugin/)
   that might help.
