 * I am trying to set up new wordpress site hosted locally using MAMP. When I try
to install my first plugin I get the following error: Warning: An unexpected
error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration.
If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could
not establish a secure connection to WordPress.org. Please contact your server
   administrator.) in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/cupcake/wp-includes/update.php on
   line 119
 * It occurs 3 times referencing 3 different lines of code (119, 287, 435). This
is my second fresh install, I thought the second would fix the problem. Any ideas?
   Thanks.

 * It’s most likely the server issue.

 * Is this a default installation of MAMP?
 * In other words, did you change any of the default MAMP settings?
 * Are you (do you) access your local site with:
 * `http://localhost:8888/cupcake` ?
 * If you are trying to install the plugin from the results of a search in the Add
New plugins area, try downloading the plugin first and then attempt a manual
   install (upload plugin).

 * I tried a manual install and got the same messages. Same result.
 * Thing is, they still install ok and appear to work. I am just uncomfortable ignoring
the warnings and just don’t want to put a lot of effort into an unstable environment
and have something blow up down the road.
 * I have never changed settings in MAMP, however I installed it quite awhile ago.
it is version Version 1.8.3 (1.8.3). WOuld that matter?

 * Could be,that’s a rather old version; the latest is 3.0.5

 * You can try downloading the plugin from the net and place them in your wp-content/
plugins folder. AFter that jus go to your admin panel and activate the plugin.
This error usually occurs when your localhost cannot interact with the wordpress
   libraries.

 * Is reinstalling MAMP unadvisable? From what I read it seems pretty complicated
   to uninstall first.

 * Well I can get the plugins in the folder and they seem to work OK so does that
mean you do not see a risk in moving forward with my site despite the original
plugin warnings? If so I will mark this resolved. I will also assume I will need
to do manual updates as well but will cross that bridge when I get there (all
the pug ins I’m downloading are to date) Thanks for your help.

 * I dont see any reason not to move ahead. These errors are common when working
   on localhost platform.
