 * Hey, it would be very useful, to have an option to let the links open in a new
   window or tab! Is this possible??

 * Agreed. It’s been a while since I wrote this plugin, but let me look and see 
   what I can do to get that working.
 * Maybe a target meta field on the post?

 * Just updated to 0.1.7 in SVN with a new option on the Settings -> Writing page.
   There’s a field where you can enter the target. If there’s anything there a target
   attribute is added to the footnote links. If it’s blank, nothing is added.
 * Either way, the links within the post body are not touched, just the ones in 
   the footnotes.
