 * This plugin sounded like it would fix I problem I have. But turning it on requires
   registration — giving MaxBlogPress your name and email (which I did) and then
   confirming that email (fine) through a process that included reading down very
   a spammy and disgusting sales pitch for ways to improve traffic to your site
   or something.
 * NO WAY
 * This doesn’t seem like a legitimate open source plugin to me. It seems like a
   infommercial-esk scam for selling crap. Now I wish I didn’t give them my contact
   info. I’m sure I’ll see spam from them.
 * I didn’t go through the rest of the enable process. I turned it off and deleted
   it. And hope it didn’t spam up my WordPress install or database.

 * I did the exact thing and I got all the spam too. I was not happy in the least.

 * Update: I did go to that guys site and removed myself from the lists I never
   joined. It seemed to work as I haven’t been spammed in a day or so.
 * I’m really surprised someone from WP or the forums here haven’t commented in
   this thread. If an extension that has a valid reason to have registration comes
   along, there is no way I will use it. Others that see this thread won’t either.
   This harms the WP community, all for one spammer trying to pull a fast one.

 * Yup, the very next day I was getting spam email from them. Even though their
   install process PROMISED they would not use my email for anything other than
   registration. In other words, they lied.
 * This plugin should be taken off wordpress.org. The whole purpose of having a
   central, curated plugin repository is to keep out the spammers. This module might
   not have spam code (we don’t know if it does or not), but it does have a scheme
   for spamming people.

 * [@jensimmons](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jensimmons/): The registration
   there is to support the development of the plugin. However, once you register
   the plugin, you don’t have to go through the registration process again for any
   other of our plugin.
 * You can rest assure that we won’t send you any spam without your permission.
   If you don’t like our newsletter then you can simply unsubscribe form it by following
   the link at the bottom. (The unsubscribe link is always there at the bottom of
   every email we send).
 * The unsubscribe process is automatic and instant.

 * There’s no way we’ll ever subscribe you ourself. Every newsletter subscription
   goes via double optin process. The only way you ever receive email from us is
   by registring the plugin and then clicking on the confirmation link on the confirmation
   email.
 * As, I said above. You can unsubscribe anytime by following the unsubscribe link
   at the bottom of email we send.

 * If you don’t like our newsletter then you don’t have the right to say us spammer.
   There are thousands of our subscribers who loves our newsletter and looks forward
   to every new one.

 * It seems you haven’t read properly what we had written in the registration form.
   There was clearly written that you’ll receive maxblogpress newsletter after you
   activate the plugin. Now, it seems like you are spreading the false information
   here.

 * Give me some proof that we are spamming people? The spammers hide behind anonymous
   email and website, never possible to reach. You know my website, you know from
   where to contact how can I be a spammer.
 * Also, spammers look for quick rip off from people. They, don’t build website
   like us. They, don’t provide free plugin support like us. They, don’t create
   dedicated forum for providing free support for the free plugins like us. They
   don’t update plugins with new features for free like us. They don’t fix bugs
   in the plugins for free like us.
 * I think you should appreciate what we are doing for free just for making you
   try our free newsletter.

 * That alone might be a breach of hosting plugins at the WordPress plugin repository.
 * Interesting this wp-hackers thread [http://lists.automattic.com/pipermail/wp-hackers/2010-January/029887.html](http://lists.automattic.com/pipermail/wp-hackers/2010-January/029887.html)

 * I followed the whole thread. There’s still debate on the donation link and I
   for sure agree that donation link should be allowed. The developer is already
   releasing his/her theme/plugin on GPL license. It itself tell the user that they
   can remove the donation link if they don’t like. It doesn’t mean author shouldn’t
   put their donation link.
 * Mike said it very well than me:
 * > Serious Question:
   > If someone devotes their time and energy into creating a plugin and/or theme
   > and offers it up via GPL-licensing to the community, is it really so bad for
   > them to put a link in their admin section asking for donation, even if it does
   > request them to link to the blog or click a button that says “I already donated?”
   > It’s GPL so anyone who wants can fork it and get rid of it if they like. Some
   > developers may not want their clients to see a donation button, but shouldn’t
   > that developer who is getting paid give a little back to the plugin/theme developer
   > who helped them get paid? It seems like being against this is like “biting
   > the hand that feeds…” (with some thumping NiN cords in the background… 🙂
