 * I’ve spent hour trying to remove the hover border that is created when hovering
   over a gallery thumbnail. Can anyone assist?

   is over the thumbnail icons.

 * The hover effect are managed into the css file. I would recommend to copy this
   file to your themes, untherwise with every update you are going back tu the standard!
