Title: Pods plugin performance issues Last modified: May 15, 2024 --- # Pods plugin performance issues * [arhamm](https://wordpress.org/support/users/arhamm/) * (@arhamm) * [2 years ago](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/pods-plugin-performance-issues/) * Hello, * I posted a topic on here before,I was advised to message someone on slack but the issue wasn’t fixed * I have a WordPress site I use to manage my e-commerce business, however the site where I have performance issues is not an e-commerce website. * I buy and resell used electronics like cameras, camera lenses, gaming consoles.. etc * I use this website to track all my products, inbound, outbound, testing… etc * I have a custom post type built with Pod for each product, so for cameras, the post type is called “camera”, gaming consoles “console” … etc * All post type are pretty much the same, most of the fields are the same too but some post types have a few more some a bit less. * For example cameras I need to test if flash works, if sd card works so I have checkboxes that reflect that. * Performance issues are occurring only with the custom type camera. I have by far the highest number of posts as of now 5772. All other custom post types have maximum 1k or 2k posts. When i try viewing or editing a camera the page takes 1 or 2 minutes to load and it often makes the site run out of ram so the site crashes and then I have to restart php. The same issue doesn’t occur with other posts. I have 16gb of ram on the server which I think its plenty. I have tried enabling the pod cache but that often makes it worse. Load times of 1+ minutes are usually related to external calls. I disabled all plugins excluding Pods and enabled the WordPress 2023 default theme and my posts are still very slow. As you mentioned there is `16 GB` of RAM available on the server, it may be beneficial to note the difference between physical memory for all server processes (all memory for everything), versus memory available to a single PHP request (one request to anything WordPress— this is the WordPress setting — it could happen multiple times in a single page request). If a single page request loads WordPress multiple times, or if a single template or plugin has a very large query or infinite loop, the web site will grind to a halt, because WordPress will be allowed to grow in memory until hitting `16 GB`, causing all other processes, such as the operating system and database, to be swapped out to virtual memory (disk). - Consider time taken for individual database requests, total number of database requests, and total memory used on the page of interest. Plugins such as [https://wordpress.org/plugins/query-monitor/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/query-monitor/) can display this information. Does a particular database query take the majority of load time? Does a particular type of query run many multiples of times, perhaps hundreds or thousands of times? - Consider server-side load time versus front-end render time. Key things to look at are TTFB — Time to First Byte for the initial HTML: this is how long it took PHP and MySQL to send the web page. After that, render time is the browser processing the page layout, downloading additional resources, or running JavaScript. Is most of the load time for the initial HTML? Are there requests which cause WordPress to load multiple times in a single page load, such as PHP script, 404’s (which load a 404 template), or other dynamic data, such as wp-ajax? If there are many images, could they be lazy-loaded? * If inspection of server-side load time (TTFB) or database query times (with Query Monitor) reveal inefficient queries, there are several ways to improve performance: - Without changing any code, some caching plugins can cache the entire page and prime the cache ahead of time. One example is `W3 Total Cache`. When doing this, one has to consider logged-out versus logged-in sessions. Default behavior for logged-in users is often that full-page caches are not used. This can be resolved by either caching fragments, or moving dynamic data to AJAX queries. - If portions of the template contain expensive queries, HTML fragments can be cached with `get_transient()` and `set_transient()` or other partial caching methods. - If many queries run repetitively, such as getting post metadata one at a time in a loop which iterates posts one at a time, consider if all necessary data can be queried up-front in a single query or a few queries. `get_post_meta()`, for example, will return all metadata at once if no key is specified.
