# pretty Permalink does not work

 * Hello Everyone,
 * I have been having some problems working out a bug with my permalink settings.
 * I am using a Ubuntu Linux server with a LAMP install. I have a number of wordpress
   websites on the machine. Some i started from scratch and some I ported from a
   different hosting service.

 * The problem I am having is that the default permalink option is the only option
   that actually works. When I use a different option such as
 * example.com/2010/11/10/sample-post/
 * The slug for the page and the URL address is set up correctly. However, the page
   does not display correctly. I get a 404 error message.
 * Not Found
 * The requested URL /about-2/ was not found on this server.
    Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu)
   Server at example.com Port 80
 * Any idea why the permalink does not work on a linux machine?

 * So I was able to positively determine that mod-rewrite in not enabled on my machine.
   I was able to look at the phpinfo file and it was not listed in the apache2 list
   of mods installed.
 * I took a look at the Using permalink page mentioned by t-p. This helped alot.

 * When I am attempting to enable the mod_rewrite….I am looking for the httpd.conf
   file but I do not know where it is. I thought it would be in the etc apache2 
   directory. I did find a file there but it did not contain any information….It
   is possible i could have created it myself.
 * Does any one know of a better source to explain how to enable mod_rewrite?
