# Problem regarding editing php

 * Hi, I am getting a error message as quoted below
 * Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/content/p3nexnas05_data02/
   37/2174637/html/wp-content/themes/hiero/inc/extras.php on line 23
 * But, I can’t open the extras.php file or anything else on my website. Everytime
   I try to access the site I am getting this message. Can someone help me on how
   to resolve this?

 * To edit that file you will need to use FTP or something like cPanel File Manager.
   It sounds like some code was added or removed from that file and a stray < tag
   was left behind. Were you editing anything before this error started?

 * Yes you are right I was trying to edit a file, but now I can’t access the site
   or backend and I tried using an ftp client, but it is not getting connected. 
   I am getting the error,

 * Hi Arnab88,
 * There can be quite a few things that cause that error in an FTP client (anything
   from a firewall to an IP ban at the host server) so I won’t be able to help with
   that. Depending on what FTP client you are using, you may want to check their
   support documentation or search their forum if they have one.
 * In the meantime, your webhost should have some sort of file manager for your 
   hosting account (e.g. File Manger in cPanel). If not, the restore function may
   be your only option.
 * Also, you should make a [Child Theme](http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes)
   if you want to change certain files for a theme.
