Problem upgrading beyond 1.8

hi love the plugin but i have noticed a problem ever since 1.8 whenever i try upgrading i get a whitescreen and if i try upgrading while the plugin is deactivated and then reactivate i get the following message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘[‘ in /nas/wp/www/xxx/xxx/wp-content/plugins/threewp-broadcast/ThreeWP_Broadcast.php on line 32

does all of that mean my server isn’t using php 5.4 or something?
