# Problem while retrieving Auth for gmail

 * Hi there,
 * I have been using this plugin for a long time (Gmail with SMTP). A week ago, 
   I noticed that emails from another forms plugin were not sent. Then, I tried 
   the build-in Gmail API service. I accurately followed all the steps of the guide
   in order to setup the API. Unfortunately, the following message is now pinned
   on the top of my wp admin area:
 * **There was a problem while retrieving Auth for gmail: Could not json decode 
   the token**
 * I repeated the whole process several times, even creating different projects,
   but I was not able to fix the problem. Besides, the plugin “General” tab is getting
   super slow unless I switch off my Gmail connection on the plugin settings. I 
   cannot send a test email too, a critical error appears when I try it (“There 
   was a critical error on your website. Please check your site administrator email
   inbox for instructions”).
 * Plugin version: 2.1.1
    WP version: 5.4.2 PHP version: 7.2.26
 * Any ideas?

 * I came searching with the same error
 * “There was a problem while retrieving Auth for gmail: Could not json decode the
   token”
 * Only set it up yesterday – the Email test worked fine with no error, but today
   when logging into WP Admin I see the above error.
 * The only thing I can think it might be trying to send an email is the plugin 
   Updraftplus Backups which email notifies me on a success full backup. TBF I could
   remove that plugin now as the host provides daily backups.
 * Edit:
    I just looked in Updraftplus plugin and it has this message `PHP event:
   code E_WARNING: json_decode() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given (
   line 177, wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/includes/Google/Auth/OAuth2.php)` off
   to investigate 🙂

 * I’m seeing this error.

 * We are using Updraft Back plugin too. I look forward to see what you find.

 * Update: the issue is back. In my case, upgrading Simple Calendar from v 3.1.31
   to 3.1.33, I’m getting an AJAX ERROR on the email sending test page (Post SMTP).
   Besides, SMTP test on ports 25,465 and 587 was failed.

 * could you please let me know which version of our plugin: WP Mail SMTP you are
   using?
 * You mentioned “Post SMTP” – That is a different SMTP plugin. If you are using“
   Post SMTP” plugin you should contact their support, to resolve your issue.
