 * I have been having issues with the auto upgrader for quite some time now on one
   particular website. I have a hunch that it may be a hosting issue but I’m not
   positive. Hopefully you guys will have a better idea than me. 🙂
 * Basically I have an almost identical install hosted elsewhere which always upgrades
   quickly and flawlessly. This other site, however, does not. The main difference
   I notice is that when I go to upgrade, it asks me for connection information:
   hostname, username, password and connection type. The other site does not ask
   for this information. Why is this and is it relevant?
 * After entering the information, I get a half loaded blank page which can stay
   for around 5 minutes (sometimes longer). I am then presented with an error. Here
   are the two separate errors I have received on my failed attempts so far:
 * Downloading update from [http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.8.5.zip](http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.8.5.zip).
 * Unpacking the update.
 * Verifying the unpacked files
 * Installing the latest version
 * Could not copy file: /public_html/wp-admin/includes/bookmark.php
 * Installation Failed
 * On my second attempt, after disabling all plugins and enabling default theme:
 * Downloading update from [http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.8.5.zip](http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.8.5.zip).
 * Unpacking the update.
 * Could not copy file: /public_html/wp-content/upgrade/wordpress-2.8.5/wordpress/
   wp-comments-post.php
 * Installation Failed
 * If I recall correctly, I had problems with the above error last upgrade. The
   first error is new though.
 * With previous upgrades, I went to Fantastico and it upgraded there, however,
   I have since been advised not to do this as I’ve been told it can wreak havoc
   with your WordPress files (?). Last time, I contacted my host and they tweaked
   some things (they didn’t tell me what) and it worked after a few attempts. Now
   I’m back to square 1…
 * Any help or advice with this problem will be appreciated! 🙂

 * I was just having an issue like this. I ended up disabling all of my plugins
   and switching my theme to default. Afterwards, I was able to complete the update.

 * Thanks for replying. 🙂
    It’s strange because I tried what you mentioned above
   by disabling plugins and switching to the default theme but that’s when I got
   the second error I posted. I’m not too sure what else I can do other than a manual
   upgrade but I can’t understand why the auto-upgrader isn’t working anymore. It’s
   quite important to have as I’m handing over this website to someone else soon
   and I doubt they’d know how to upgrade manually.

 * Yeah, I’m struggling to find any answers. I’m going to contact my host again
   but it seems like I have to do this now every time there’s an upgrade. They tweak
   about with a few things until I get it to work but then it seems to revert back
   to its old ways by the time the next upgrade is released. I wish I knew what
   it was they were changing to get it to work…
