Procedure ?

Hi !
The procedure of WP Retina 2x is not clear for me…
I uploaded all the images (full size), now I want upload the same images (retina), named with @2x, but it seems impossible in the media library. I could use FTP, but I will miss the possibility to have thumbnails in retina version (very useful for galleries).
Maybe I didn’t understand some points (and maybe I’m not good with english !), but I need some help.
Thanks ! π

I have to say that would be more easy to upload retina images after the “standard” images, because all my “old” (and non-retina) images contain legends, etc. So, it would be a long work to rebuild all this stuff.
I can imagine same for other people.
Hello,
Best is to check on Internet, this is a not a subject that can be explained a little paragraph, there are many things to consider and everybody uses the plugin differently.
You can start with:
– https://www.isaumya.com/wp-retina-2x-pro-review-of-a-must-have-wordpress-image-plugin/You don’t need to use FTP or rename any file. If you want to use a retina image directly for your full-size image, then you need to enable Retina for Full Size in the options, which is part of the Pro. Then you just need to upload a bigger image (at least twice the full-size) in the Retina Dashboard in the Retina for Full-Size column, the plugin will resize it and name it accordingly automatically π
Thank you Jordy,
But some things keep unclear… Precisions would be helpful.
I have uploaded (with FTP) retina images (with @2x before the extension). So, WP Retina 2x will recognize it ? And, if I buy WP Retina 2x Pro, these retina images will be used to generate retina versions of the thumbnails ?
Your tutorial is nice, but sometimes a little fuzzy.
I like control the dimensions of my images. I.e., generally I’m using 960 x 640 for my photos (1920 x 1280 in retina). All my images are processed in a logical way. So, I upload only images with the definition/size I want. I let wordpress (and WP Retina 2X) generates thumbnails, but not the image itself.
It’s especially unclear for the Pro version. If I upload (via WordPress) images in retina resolution (i.e. 1920 x 1280, with @2x in the filename), I expect that WP Retina 2X Pro will generate standard resolutions images (in this case, 960 x 640, with the standard filename). Is it right ?
I hope you will understand my questions.
Best regards

The image uploaded by FTP will be also recognized. Of course, the @2x files needs to be next to the original file. The @2x files will not be used to generate files though (even though it could in the case of a full-size for Retina). Actually, it will in near future since the @2x full-size will be generated through an option thanks to a specific imaging algorithm.
Itβs especially unclear for the Pro version. If I upload (via WordPress) images in retina resolution (i.e. 1920 x 1280, with @2x in the filename), I expect that WP Retina 2X Pro will generate standard resolutions images (in this case, 960 x 640, with the standard filename). Is it right ?
Never upload a Retina resolution through the uploader. Upload the normal images. The normal images will be full-size. In the case of the Pro, users upload a normal full-size image, and then upload a @2x image for it in the Retina dashboard.
Most users don’t do that; they are using the image sizes instead. So they just upload a “big” image, it’s not important how big it is, and they use the Medium, Large or whatever (is created by the theme) size. They don’t use the full-size, even less Retina for full-size.
I must be a little nincompoop.
So, in the case I want an image of 960 x 640 (standard size) and 1920 x 1280 (retina size), what I have to do ? (upload what and with what name ?)
And, in the case I want an image of 480 x 200 (standard size) and 960 x 400 (retina size), what I have to do ?
What is unclear is the manner of managing the files and dimensions… So, with those two examples, maybe it will be more clear.
If you file is helloworld.jpg then your retina file needs to be [email protected], that’s pretty much it π But that said the plugin does everything for you.

https://meowapps.com/wp-retina-2x/debug-retina/Excuse me… what I have always understand is that i need to prepare both images (helloworld.jpg and [email protected]) and that WP-Retina does the rest. Is it right ?
And I need o purchass WP-Retina-2x Pro to upload the @2x retina full size files ?
Sorry, but some things can be interpreted with different manners.
I’ve read many times your tutorials, but there is always some doubts. Everyone is talking with his own logical thought and it is a source of misunderstanding.
Excuse me⦠what I have always understand is that i need to prepare both images (helloworld.jpg and [email protected]) and that WP-Retina does the rest. Is it right ?
Exactly, but you don’t always need to prepare them. The alternative sizes (set up by WordPress and your theme) are automatically created by the plugin (if possible). It’s explained on my website in details.
And I need o purchass WP-Retina-2x Pro to upload the @2x retina full size files ?
If you upload that file manually (through FTP for example), you don’t need Pro. You could upload through WordPress uploader but it might go in another folder, the name might be changed, and it will be referenced everywhere as a Media which makes the install look messy.
Thank you very much Jordy !
Finally, my only question is – for the Pro version – I have just to have two files
(helloworld.jpg and [email protected]) to upload through the WP-Retina-2x Pro uploader ?(The Pro version could be nice to generate also the different media sizes in Retina)
Maybe the tutorials could be more easy to understand with a concrete example “step by step” for both versions (pro – non pro). The features are evident, but the working not so. π
Finally, my only question is β for the Pro version β I have just to have two files
(helloworld.jpg and [email protected]) to upload through the WP-Retina-2x Pro uploader ?You upload the standard version normally, and the retina version of it (any size is okay as long as it’s twice bigger) in the Retina Dashboard, in the row for this media.
I am actually working on simplifying the whole process, right now I have too much support but as soon as I have some time for programming and enhancing I will definitely do π
Good news !
In my mind, WP-Retina 2x should be working like that :
– WP-Retina-2x manages that any new image it uploads is a retina (twice the size) and generates the standard size proportionnally
– WP-Retina-2x Pro manages “retina updates” of “old” images (previously uploaded in standard size) with “@2x” filesIn my workflow, for photos, I export directly in (generally) 1920 x 1280 (retina) and 960 x 640 (standard). For others, I determine the sizes needed. So, I don’t want any interpretation of sizes.
So, what and how manages sizes WP-Retina-2x Pro is important.
At this point, I don’t know if I have to prepare files in both resolutions (standard and retina, with “@2x” for retina) for new images and retina files for old images I want also in retina (with files with “@2x”).
For the non-Pro version of WP-Retina-2x, it’s easy (generates some thumbnails in retina, add @2x files via FTP), but for the Pro version there is a lack of precision about the needed files and the resizing.
Sorry to bother you, maybe I could not understand well some things in english !
Best regards
