 * Is it possible to change WP’s main file from index.php to something like news.
   php.
 * I use query strings and my main template is called index.php, and I would like
   to load the news onto the main page..
 * Thanks.

 * Sure, just rename index.php to news.php and it should work fine. The only reason
   that it is index.php is because most people want it as the root file. The only
   thing index.php does is pull the wp-blog-header.php file. Also make sure to change
   your blog URI to news.php too, I think. It might be ok to leave it, but check
   and see how it works.
