Install the WP new site in a sub-folder and work on it there. When you are ready, remove the old site & database and see Allow WordPress to take over the root domain.

I want to change the theme of my website but keep the current one operational and work on the new one in the background until it is set up properly. The difference is that I want to keep the same domain name and not change that aspect, just redo the theme…

mixman003 – what you are wanting to do is exactly what I need so I think the responses will be the same for both of us. I too do not want to change the domain name either. So whatever help you get will help me also.
