    If you make it mandatory to register in order to be
   able to comment – then you have to provide a “Register” link.

 * I see that now. I don’t want visitors to automatically be taken to the dashboard
   after logging in.

 * Then don’t require registering and you are fine. I, for one, never register, 
   rather keep my comments for myself because I consider it a waste of my time.

 * Even not registering you can get their name and email (mandatory) on most of 
   the blogs, WP shows their IP adress – and optionally you get their URL.
    What
   else do you get if they register?

 * If I don’t require them to register I don’t see WP getting their email address.

    admin panel >Options > Discussion > check the box where it says–
   Before a comment appears: Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
