 * I have set the discussion controls to restrict comments to registered users in
   an effort to control spam on my blog and to improve the quality of my comments.
   I have previously had a number of viewers register as users, and they have been
   cited as “subscriber”, and I have a list of their IDs. Is the registration to
   make comments different from this registration for “users”? If so, will I receive
   a different notification of such registration? Will I also have a different list
   of registered commentators? Will registered commentators still have to pass the
   several filters I have installed to control spam? And will I also have the right
   to approve or to reject their comments? I see a link in my Meta box for registration,
   but I’m not sure of its purpose. Is there a different link for those who want
   to leave comments? I hope someone can answer these questions for me. Thanks for
   any help.

 * No. It means that only people who register can post comments on your site.

 * No. And no.

 * Yes & yes.

 * Thanks for your answers to my questions. I don’t see a clear instruction that
   informs viewers that they must register in order to leave a comment to any of
   my posts. How will they know that they have to do this? Are those who have currently
   been approved as “subscriber” now entitled to submit comments to any of my posts?
   I don’t know if any of them have, but I’m just wondering if they need a different
   status for their submission of comments. I still don’t clearly understand this
   particular part of the registration process.

 * I don’t understand your response to my inquiry. Where are any instructions to
   my viewers that tell them that they have to register in order to submit a comment
   to any of my posts?

 * I’m not sure what’s not to understand. Visit the link I posted above.
    This link
   is the result of clicking on the “add comments” icon in any of your posts.
 * [http://christianityetc.org/blog/an-invitation/#respond](http://christianityetc.org/blog/an-invitation/#respond)
 * See the result? “You must be logged in to post a comment.”
 * In response to your statement:
 * > I don’t see a clear instruction that informs viewers that they must register
   > in order to leave a comment to any of my posts.
 * _“You must be logged in to post a comment.”_
 * That is a pretty clear visual indicator that your guests must be logged in to
   comment. It is also a link. When clicked, it takes them to: //christianityetc.
   org/blog/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fchristianityetc.org%2Fblog%2Fan-
   invitation%2F
 * Where your guests/users can either login or Register in order to comment on your
   blog.

 * Clayton,
    I saw your comment in my “pending” box waiting for my approval. This
   indicates to me that you passed the filters for spam, but I didn’t see any notice
   of your registration in my blog. How could you submit your comment without being
   registered? You are not listed as one of my “subscriber” users. So I’m still
   somewhat confused about this registration step in this process. Your further
   help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.

 * It wasn’t me. I have made no attempt to comment or register on your blog. I have
   no reason to. You do allow registration, so I can only assume that someone saw
   this thread and thought it might be amusing to use my nickname to comment or
   register on your blog. You should treat it as such.

 * I just happened to think; could it simply be a trackback or pingback type of
   issue that landed in your comments box? A lot of sites seem to mirror/scrape
   the posts here on wordpress.org, and maybe it caused a pingback or trackback
   to land in your moderation queue (if that’s even possible). Is the comment exactly
   the same as what I posted above? Here is some info that might be relevant. [http://codex.wordpress.org/Introduction_to_Blogging#Comment_Spam](http://codex.wordpress.org/Introduction_to_Blogging#Comment_Spam)

   That whole page is good reading. It may be possible that it’s a pingback/trackback
   type of thing, rather than someone actually trying to comment without registering,
   but I’m not sure.

 * Clayton,
    The comment had a little more detail with it in addition to the text
   of your statement. It may have been a “pingback”, but I don’t know how that feature
   of these programs works. I printed a copy of the Codex article on an “Introduction
   to Blogging”, so that may add to my understanding of some of these features.
   Since I required viewers to register before leaving any comment, I haven’t received
   any comments. I also haven’t received any spam. For awhile I was allowing non-
   passed comments to be sent to my “trash” box just so I could see what some viewers
   were saying about me and my blog, but none of their comments added anything to
   my posted topics for discussion. But now I don’t even bother with checking such“
   trash”. I assume that my present settings are the best way for me to control
   spam, recognizing that legitimate comments are probably going to be few and far
   between on my blog. Thanks for you further response.

 * You’re welcome. One other thing you may find useful; if you take a look in Dashboard
   > Settings > Discussion , you can [turn off the trackbacks and pingbacks](http://codex.wordpress.org/images/5/55/options-discussion1.png)
   if you like. That will still allow you to override the settings on individual
   posts if you want to make an exception for certain articles.
 * Your site is looking good, by the way. That theme is one of my favorites. Best
   wishes!

 * Basically I think that trackbacks and pingbacks represent legitimate responses
   to my posts, so I conclude that it is probably OK to accept them. Thanks for
   the compliment regarding the display of my site. I get a lot of comments regarding
   this feature of my site and the level of my writing, but most of them are treated
   as spam. At least a large number of viewers apparently regard my blog as interesting,
   because many of them have marked in with “bookmarks”. I’ll keep studying about
   this feature.
