remove label from categories widget

In the sidebar widget area, I’m using the default “Categories” widget. I’m using a dropdown menu for “Select Category” and the default widget insists on putting the label “Categories” just before the dropdown itself which already has the text “Select Category” in it. I’m not finding any way to remove this. Any ideas?

I tried searching for this but when I try to use anything using the search function all I get is an empty page that grinds away for as long as I’m willing to sit and look at it.
