 * how do i replace the comment bubble at the top of the post with “leave a comment”
   form available to the public at the bottom of the post. my mother insists no 
   one will know what the bubble means (it’s her site i’m working on)

 * ooh sorry, it’s using the twenty eleven theme. i’m kind of thinking i’d have 
   to go into code, if i do i know what to write BUT don’t know where to put it 
   in the code

 * It can be done with CSS, review that and create a Child Theme for such work.

 * It sounds as though you need to create a [Child Theme](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/replace-comment-bubble/codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes?output_format=md)
   and copy & paste the relevant template into your Child Theme directory. Then 
   work on that template file (within the Child Theme directory).
