Required fields are checked too early

I have a form created with some optional and some required inputs, a required acceptance checkbox and a group of optional checkboxes.

As soon as I tick one of my optional checkboxes, all the controls are activated and the required fields message is displayed.

How can I ensure that these required field checks are only carried out when the form is submitted?
