I have been through the countless threads on the topic of TinyMCE in WordPress. Specifically, my editor was not showing any formatting buttons, and the Visual tab was “active”, although I could only see HTML tags in the typing area. Clicking the HTML tab had no effect. * I have been replacing files left and right from a working version on one site to a non-working version on another site. I took a look at the errors Firebug’s Console was giving me, and it kept bringing up errors in **wp-includes/js/tinymce/ themes/advanced/editor_template.js**. * As soon as I replaced this file, and did a Control+F5 refresh in Firefox, bam, it worked. Replacing the template file didn’t work, but replacing the entire tinymce folder did. It made my day. My authors who are using IE8 in Windows have been going nuts with their text jumping back up to the top, every time they highlight some text and try to click on “Bold” or some other button in the toolbar.
