# Root redirect

 * Rightly or wrongly, I built metalpress.co.uk in a sub folder (/wp/) so that the
   existing html site could remain live throughout the process. Of course I was 
   then faced with the whole moving the site debacle on completion and effectively
   had to start again when I got it badly wrong at the first attempt and lost all
   access and, as it appeared, everything!
    For urgencies sake I have used a simple.
   htaccess redirect (“DirectoryIndex /wp/index.php”) to the sub folder, which works
   for now but once into the site all the URL address strings display the mis-rooted
   directory. Is there any simple solution to this? Either moving the site out of
   the sub folder (terrified to try that again!) or affecting the page URLs should
   I stick with the redirect.

 * Thanks esmi. I tried that but the redirect didn’t work. The .htaccess file would
   disappear after a few seconds of upload and not have any effect.

 * Then contact your hosts. You seem to have a server-related issue.

 * Just have. They say they have limited htaccess capability as they don’t run Apache(?!).
   Some work, some don’t. They couldn’t explain why the file disappeared though.

 * What I did before was move everything to the root (say, from [http://www.mydomain.com/wp/](http://www.mydomain.com/wp/)
   to [http://www.mydomain.com](http://www.mydomain.com)). Then I edited the phpmyadmin
   wp_options table — I looked for all instances of [http://www.mydomain.com/wp](http://www.mydomain.com/wp)
   and changed it to [http://www.mydomain.com](http://www.mydomain.com).

 * Ugh 🙁 I hate Zeus with a vengeance! And I certainly wouldn’t recommend it for
   a WP site. As it stands, your only real option will be to try another full site
   move. Make sure that you follow the instructions in [Moving_WordPress](http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress)
   and you should be fine.
