For some reason the IP address for my server is being throttled (Wordfence is giving this message: “Exceeded the maximum global requests per minute for crawlers or humans.”).

I’m guessing this has something to do with the setting under “How does Wordfence get IPs.” Currently this is set to “Let Wordfence use the most secure method …”

My site does use nginx and Amazon’s Cloudfront CDC. However, users are coming in from a whole variety of IP addresses.

Should I be changing the setting under “How does Wordfence get IPs” or something different? If so, what should I adjust? I want to make sure that my server doesn’t get throttled or blocked while still ensuring the site is protected.

Yes, “How does Wordfence get IPs” should probably be set to “X-Forwarded-For” in your case. In some cases, nginx may be set to use X-Real-IP instead, so you could choose that if it does not help.

You can verify if it is working by viewing the Live Traffic page on the Wordfence menu. Changing the setting won’t fix old visits, but if you visit the site in a second browser without logging in, you can verify that your own IP address appears in Live Traffic.
