# Setting Default Language

 * I’m trying to set up a site in Japanese and English. In general, things seem 
   to be going swimmingly. Here’s my problem:
 * I want to set the default language as Japanese. I want visitors to type in “sitedomain.
   com” and go to the Japanese version.
 * I’ve followed tutorials for doing this in wp-config.php but it didn’t work.
 * Any clues?

 * I should specify that the default language is set to English (and shows up as
   such in the Language Settings admin menu). Also, going to the plain domain “sitedomain.
   com” brings up the English version.

 * On your qTranslate-X settings page, expand the **General Settings** section. 
   This will reveal **Default Language / Order**, which should display a list of
   your enabled languages. Here you can both change the order in which the languages
   are to be listed (by clicking the up/down arrows) and select your default language(
   by checking the radio button next to the language you wish to be the default).
 * When done, click the Save Changes button. Hope that helps. 🙂

 * Yes, thank you [@jjbte](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jjbte/)! I tried 
   this and that and right before noticing your response I realized I wasn’t opening
   the plugin options.
 * Then, even after changing things, Chrome kept opening the English version by 
   default. However, other browsers were following my set default (Japanese). I 
   think Chrome was automating things with its own defaults.

   cookies in Chrome. Once you visit your site in a certain language, qTrans sets
   a cookie in your browser for that language. Delete the cookie, and Chrome should
   load your Japanese site (and a new cookie will be set for Japanese).

   Chrome does it. I set the default language URL to not display as a subdirectory(
   meaning it was automatically going to English but still showing the “/en”), so
   it was extra confusing.
