• Hi there

This may be a simple question, but I’m new and can’t seem to get the answer.

I have a Wix Website I want to re-create / rebuild on WP in the next month. My preference is to set up a WP premium account and building the site, before bringing the domain across from Wix. I can’t see how to do that in the purchase process, since WP requires you to buy a domain, or transfer a domain to get started.

Any advice or guidance gratefully received as this is a new platform for me.

    Thank you

    S Village

Just so you’re clear: you are here in the ww.wp.xz.cn forum, which is about the WordPress software itself. You will not find any website hosting offers here on this platform. What you seem to be referring to is the wordpress.COM offer. The difference is explained here:

    What’s the difference between ww.wp.xz.cn and WordPress.com?

So if you want to use wordpress.COM, I would recommend contacting their support team: https://wordpress.com/support/

If you want to use the software with a custom installation, you need a host where you can install it. There are thousands of offers for this, and recommending one is not the purpose of this forum. Here is a general overview: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/hosting/

The installation is explained here, for example: https://learn.ww.wp.xz.cn/lesson/wordpress-installation/

At a high level, you will need to know who controls the DNS for your domain. Assuming you own the domain directly and have direct control over the DNS, you will likely have an A record for http://www.domain….
which points towards your current hosting provider. You will need to create a second A record for www2.domain…. or some other name other than what you are currently pointing to your current provider. You will need to contract with some other hosting service for them to create a vhost for www2.domain… and then you build your site there. When you are ready to change, after you have tested everything, you ask your provider to update your vhost to use www instead of or in addition to www2 and change the DNS for http://www.domain…. to point to your new hosting service.

The only rub is that if you got a free domain with service, you may not actually own the domain and may only be renting it.
