# Sidebars Question

 * Why do software developers always produce software for the web that _always_ 
   defaults to the waste of space at the sides.
 * I know that the idea, in general, is to be able to show those hideous flashing
   adverts that so pollute online life: but surely, most people are NOT putting 
   adverts on their sites: blogging being IMV, a largely small audience affair.
 * I’m spending all this money on bigger and wider screens, and the developers of
   all the software are forever cramming the content into a tiny space in the middle
   of the screen.
 * Are the sidebars controllable?

 * Yes, sidebars are controllable.
 * The underlying theory for narrow content columns is the same as used in newspapers
   and magazines: it’s easier to quickly read a narrow column without losing your
   place.

   might help; though you’re most likely going to want to read any of the [CSS](http://codex.wordpress.org/CSS)
   specific documents in the Codex.

 * Also keep in mind it’s the theme, not WordPress, which sets the agenda for your
   blog’s layout. You can easily replace the default with another that doesn’t use
   a fixed width. The Classic theme is an example of this; it also comes with WordPress(
   check under Presentation in your WordPress installation).

 * Many thanks: I had no idea about the narrow columns thing, how interesting. It
   just ‘feels’ like wasted space to me.
