Sorry to hear of the problem you are having.
The plugin is working fine on my test site.
This can also be due to plugin/theme conflict.
You can just try on your development site using default WordPress theme like Twenty Thirteen and deactivating all other plugins as displayed in the flowchart on the following page to know which theme/plugin is conflicting if any.

Alternatively you can check specifically what is causing the issue by enabling WP_DEBUG mode? To do this, just go to wp-config.php include this:
define('WP_DEBUG',true);
You might already have a line for WP_DEBUG, so just make sure it’s set to true.

Thank you for your detailed support but I don’t have time to try anything else. It didn’t work so I have to get back to fighting the Russian malware and other work . I will continue using Tinypng and ImmOptim which have always worked well. But I will give Smush It a try on other sites in future.
