I am trying to use SEOPress on our site but, like many other users, I receive an error when I try to access our sitemaps.xml document:

“This page contains the following errors:

error on line 2 at column 6: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the document

Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.”

And the rendering outputs precisely nothing. Note that I tried the added line of code solution suggested here:

https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/error-in-sitemap-xml-2/

to no avail — neither suggested numbered line, BTW, begins with “foreach.” Please advise on how to proceed and thanks.

Hello,

try to disable the execution of shortcodes in your XML sitemaps using this hook:

https://www.seopress.org/support/hooks/enable-disable-execution-of-shortcodes-in-xml-image-sitemaps/

Paste the snippet to your functions.php file.

Hi, thanks for your prompt response. Sorry to say, however, that adding this line of code to my theme’s functions.php file:

add_filter('seopress_sitemaps_single_shortcodes', '__return_false');

has resulted in no change to the result when I go to (after emptying my cache and hard reloading the page in my browser) https://vescomdecor.com/sitemaps.xml/ . Note that I get a slightly different error when I try to load the sitemap in Firefox (the initial error above is from Chrome):

You have an empty line at the beginning of the sitemap.

It’s probably due to a bad opening / closing PHP tag somewhere in your code (check your wp-config.php, theme files, custom code…).
