 * both sitemap.xml and sitemapindex.xml used to work just fine, and without notice,
   all of the sitemap.xml files are no longer accessible. im pretty sure we didnt
   change or update anything, but i have about 400 sites on a multisite with broken
   sitemaps at the moment.

    somehow a blank xml file got dropped into the root dir of the wordpress
   installation and messed it all up – now sitemaps display on sitemap.xml
