To export a shipment out of your domestic countries, carriers as DHL require this information to ensure that your shipments do not get stuck in customs of the country you are shipping to. Most countries require this as a description of what your imported item is. we are currently preparing a webservice to return those codes to you automatically. In many cases, it is also accepted, if you just provide your local HS code (Germany) and provide this one to DHL. In case local customs does inspect the item they often convert your HS code into their Regional codes (e.g. in case you are selling into PRC). Since it is a standardized code, in many cases this is suitable.
