I’m testing Akismet on a simple blog and wanted to understand one thing. If a comment is marked as spam by mistake, does moving it back help Akismet learn better for future comments?

    Hi @jazmyn30,

Yes, moving a comment out of the spam folder helps Akismet learn and improve its accuracy for your site.

Here’s how it works: when you “unspam” a comment (mark it as “Not Spam”), your site sends a false positive report back to the Akismet API. Akismet takes that feedback into consideration and can adjust its behavior – not just for your site, but potentially across the entire network of sites Akismet protects. The same is true in reverse: if a spam comment slips through and you mark it as spam, that sends a “missed spam” report that also helps Akismet learn.

One important tip: timeliness matters. Akismet learns best when you review your spam folder regularly and correct mistakes promptly – ideally within a few days. If a comment has been sitting in the spam folder for weeks, Akismet has already moved on from the factors that caused it to be flagged, so unspamming it at that point won’t be as useful for improving future accuracy.

So the best practice is to check your spam folder regularly and unspam any legitimate comments as soon as you spot them. That continuous feedback loop is what helps Akismet keep getting better over time.

    Thanks!
