Spaminator question.

    I’m getting bashed with comment spam, so I installed Spaminator, activated it, and waited. I checked an hour or so later, and I had 15 new spam comments. Everything in my control panels, etc., looks the same.

    I’m not a developer, and I’m not finding anything searching here that’s helping. What information do you need from me to figure out what I’m doing wrong?

    Update: I did this, and no spam within the past 15 minutes. Hopefully I won’t get the motherload overnight.

    Spaminator works in concert with the spam words list. If you don’t have any words in your list, you will get spam until you “teach” Spaminator what to look for.

    This past weekend I had several hundred poker spams and Spaminator caught every single one of them.

    Well, the hack above seems to have worked, so I’m not panicking anymore.

    I’m guessing you’re talking about the spam words list under Options -> Discussion, in the field in the Comment Moderation section.

    So if I get spam and notice none of my spam words appear in it, I should amend my spam words list. If I continue to get spam, then I have a problem. Am I correct?

    Anybody there?

    I had to undo the hack because I realized it disabled comments completely for some reason.

    I already had a list of spam words. I’ve been getting poker spam too, so I added the word poker to my list. As soon as I undid the hack I got a poker spam comment. Does that mean Spaminator isn’t working, or does the three strikes thing me I’ll have to get three of them?

    I hate to be a pain in the ass here, but I also installed Kitten’s Spam Words (thinking maybe that’s what you meant) — it’s working fine, but the spam is still coming.

    I’m using a combination of a Captcha (one of those human-only “type the text in the image” things) and an auto-updating open-proxy blocklist.

    I got them from http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/spam/ and I haven’t had any spam since.

    Thanks ssokolow. Somehow my spam just stopped, so I’m guessing Spaminator mysteriously started working. It’s weird, because spam words from the spam I was getting were in my list before it started working, but whatever — I’m not questioning it unless it happens again.

    I spoke too soon. The spam is back!

    Comment Killer is killing the comments in moderation, but the “Please approve” notifications are still flooding my e-mail inbox.

    I would really, really appreciate help from anyone in getting Spaminator to work.
