 * It’s been 7 years sice I created a blog. The one I just started ([http://www.casualham.com/](http://www.casualham.com/))
   is staring to drive me crazy. I’m using the Sunspot theme by Automattic and some
   of my posts have comment balloons and others do not. I have played with the carious
   settings like a Rubiks cube and had no success in getting my comments in line.
   Any clues will be appreciated. Thanks.

 * The comment balloons are displayed when you are allowing comments on that particular
   post.

 * Yes, I know. Thanks. As far as I’m aware, I’m allowing them on ALL posts but
   they only appear on some. Spotty, yes?

 * I’d suggest that you actually check the Discussion pane in each Edit Post page
   where they are not appearing before you blame the theme.

 * I realize that, as I get older, my brain density shrinks, and the extra space
   is invaded by additional bone mass, It becomes a bit more difficult for me to
   learn. But…
 * I haven’t blamed anyone or anything for doing anything. What I’ve said is that
   some of my posts come through with comment balloons and others don’t. You might
   force yourself to take a look. [http://www.casualham.com/](http://www.casualham.com/)
   to see what I’m talking about.
 * What I’ve asked is if anyone might know some specific reason why this might be
   happening or a specific “switch” that needs to be prodded. My apologies, but
   I haven’t seen that in your generic answers yet.
 * It’s like I’ve called out, “Hey, I’m falling off a building! Can someone help?”
   And you’ve answered back, “You should use a rope!” Can you see where that might
   not solve the issue? The answer makes sense but it comes a little late in the
   process.

 * I have done. Twice. Have you checked the individual posts yet?

 * Then I presume you know why things are happening and just don’t want to tell
   me? As for me, I can’t see anything obvious and don’t know enough to tell even
   if it’s just a little less than obvious. Would I be so eager to expose my ignorance
   if I knew better?

 * After using WordPress for 10 years, I have a pretty good idea how it works, thank
   you. Have you checked the Discussion pane in the individual posts yet?
 * I would also strongly recommend that you try reading the [forum rules](http://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome)–
   especially [this section](http://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome#Being_.27Mod_Watched.27_or_Banned).

 * Comments are very much NOT open here: [http://www.casualham.com/?p=38](http://www.casualham.com/?p=38)
 * If they were, the ‘you have to be logged in…’ message would show for me. So look
   at the post, see if the comments are allowed.
 * Then go look at your settings and see if **Automatically close comments on articles
   older than [X] days** is set. [https://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Discussion_Screen](https://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Discussion_Screen)
 * Though that’s only a day old, it’s unlikely to be that.
 * You can also try switching themes to see if the problem goes away. But based
   on the information we have, the simplest answer is “Comments are turned off on
   that post.”

 * your last two replies have been moderated because they did not contribute to
   the technical side of the topic.
 * without being able to actual login into the admin area and to check the comments
   settings, viewing the comment bubbles and checking the code in the theme’s content.
   php tempalte is the only thing which can be checked from the outside; and that
   indicates that comments must be dis-allowed for those posts without bubble.
 * question again:
    have you checked if comments are allowed for those posts without
   comment bubble, for instance by going to _**dashboard – posts – all posts**_;
   then click ‘quickedit’ below the corresponding post title, and check is ‘allow
   comments’ is ticked?
 * the _**dashboard – settings – discussion**_ is not a good indicator if comments
   are allowed on all posts as those settings only take effect for posts published
   after the change of settings.

 * None of your Diva’s replies have contributed anything to the technical side of
   the question either. You are being arbitrary, and disingenuous. But you have
   the power to be that way, so what the heck. Protect your own, right? Actually,
   I understand. I had a corporate job 3 decades ago. That’s the way it works.
 * I thank you, however, for providing me with a positive direction. At your suggestion
   I went through the process you described and found that while the very first
   post and the last 3 posts allowed comments in the manner you described, those
   in the middle did not. I’ll be changing that shortly.
 * Again, thank you. I wish you’d picked up this thread a few days ago. It would
   have solved the problem and saved me much frustration.

 * Mika- I have comments set to be turned off after 28 days for an individual post.
   What I’ve found is that if you leave comments open for too long they can become
   an inroad for hackers. (Killed two of the 7 sites I was hosting over the years
   for just that reason.)
 * Right now, following the pointers given to me by alchymyth, it looks like I must
   have changed the global settings after the first post and then, trying to fumble
   into what was happening thereafter, changed them back for the last three (and
   subsequent?) posts. It looks like all I have to do is go through the process
   he described to straighten out the 5 or so posts without comment balloons.
 * Thanks.

 * I have to contradict:
 * direction were given in the second reply, with slightly different words: ‘check
   the Discussion pane in each Edit Post’;
    the only issue with that might be that
   this ‘discussion’ pane a bit below the post editor is not always there if the
   corresponding ‘screen options’ are not ticked.
 * the positive end result is that you got on the way of solving your problem 😉

 * We could dance around the semantics forever. As you note, the better news is
   that one post from you resulted in a level of clarity that resolved the issue.
   Maybe it won’t take me another 6 years to come back with a third question (you’ve
   been warned)! 🙂 Thanks again.
