 * First time I ever attempted this, actually, but I wanted to insert some information
between the list items in an ordered list and pick up the numbering where I left
off. The problem, however, is that WordPress strips out the “start” attribute
on the ol tag, so this doesn’t appear to be possible.
 * Now, I know that this attribute was deprecated (for some bizarre reason I never
understood) in HTML 4.01, but in HTML 5, it’s back. So I humbly suggest WordPress
leave this attribute alone when it finds it.
 * For reference, I’m blogging on my university’s installation of WordPress Mu.

 * You’re talking about via the visual GUI editor, right, not the HTML editor?

 * Well, even though I’m comfortable with HTML, I do like to use the visual editor.
So what I did was add the attribute in the HTML editor, and then switched back
to the GUI editor, at which point it stripped the attribute off.
 * I did just discover, however, that if you switch to the HTML editor, add the
attribute, save it, and then never again look at the post in the GUI editor,
it will actually retain your start attribute. So I guess there’s a workaround–
you can just do this when you’re finished working on the post.

 * Yeah, if that’s the case, then it’s a TinyMCE setting probably, more than a WordPress
setting. There’s an Advanced TinyMCE plugin that may be able to help you set
   things like that.

 * I thought TinyMCE is a part of WordPress — at least, it’s released with it. If
the bug can’t be reported here, then where ought it to be? :/
