subfolders?

how do wordpress user create subfolders for the categories? for example, check out this site:
when you click on a category, it shows the url:
http://g.litchd.com/audio-editing
on my site however…. it shows as http://www.mysite.com/?cat=22
how do i remove the cat part of my url and change it to a word of my choice instead?
