 * Not sure if this belongs in everything else or perhaps installation.
   Used to
be a wordpress.com blog. Now a hosted wordpress.org blog. Previously, we had “
subscribers” and they would be notified when a new post was published, more as
a reminder than anything else. My understanding is this was a feature built-in
to wordpress.com sites, perhaps by jetpack integration? Before moving we did take
a download of that subscriber list. We’d like to add just a simple subscribe
button for new visitors and then have automatic email notification of published
posts and if possible import our existing list.– can this be done without using
the jetpack plugin (and wordpress.com), preferably simply?– in looking around
at various plugins (most seem overkill) it is not clear if the ‘subscribers’
or ‘members’ are kept in a seperate db or are created as new users with the subscriber
role? Does it even matter for what we want to do?
 * And lastly, it needs to be free – hosting is already being picked up gratis by
the two admins. We are not a commercial site and have no intentions of “paid”
subscribers, marketing yadayda or anything like that.
   I’m sure we’re not the
only ones but my searches here all seem to turn up stuff related to jetpack. Thanks

 * The question is what these subscribers should expect? When they subscribe, is
it to send them a newsletter or some form of notification? Having a list and
subscribing is all well and good, but users need to experience something as a
   result.
 * Otherwise, you can probably use the Jetpack plugin separately to have this feature
in your new installation as well. I suspect that the subscriber function you
experienced with .com will be included there 1:1. You can ask for details in
   the Jetpack support forum: [https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack/](https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack/)

 * The subscribers only want/need a notification of a new posts, they do not even
need the content of the post. Again, we’d prefer to avoid anything involving
wordpress.com (which seems to include Jetpack from my reading of the plug-in
   details)

 * There are certainly alternatives for this application. Take a look at them:

 * Thanks! I actually stumbled on post-notify-users over coffee this morning, will
be testing with just admins later. Also think I have found another plugin to
handle the subscriber side of things, was able to verify it drops them directly
into wp user db and not something else. Fingers crossed.
