Suggested Best Practices

    Hey WP community,

    I’m currently in early development, and doing my first migration from TypePad to WP for a client.

    That said, I haven’t set up a WPMU multi-site before. I’m pretty sure I have all my ducks in a row, but I’m looking to see what everyone is thinking about best practices at the end of 2012.

    My plan:

    Create the multisite within the install, with main site within root and each other site in sub-domains. I’ll also be using the db separation method instead of having three sql dbs ( client has three main properties, which will each have their own look and feel.)

    Your suggestions for best practices much appreciated.

    The what now?

    Multisite has but one DB for your pleasure. Separate tables keep the look and feel of each site separate.

    I’m at the dev stage where the decision to have separate installs in sub-domains or go the multi-site route is a super high priority. Talking Mount Everest here 😉

    My biggest issue right now are the limits to developing multi-site. My host (cpanel/apache) & wp are giving me trouble developing a multi-site before launching.

    I’m concerned about the work it will take to change permalinks and code when the site goes live.

    Based on the disjointed and limited information you provided, the best I can say is ‘You’ll probably be fine with Multisite.’

    I still have no idea what this ‘DB separation’ method is of which you speak. I run Multisite on cpanel with apache without any issues.

    So I’ve been working to develop MU on my VPS for over a week now and have decided that the best way to do this, via development, with the domain hosted elsewhere until the launch will be to develop separate WP installs in separate subfolders, then after the client has agreed to the designs, to export each individual site and wp information and create the MU on a domain that is fully propagated.

    My misunderstanding was around the limits to what one can use for site names when adding new sites.

    It also seems like a complete nightmare to switch over a site developed via VPS urls to other urls.
