Suggestion to allow customer to edit additional fields

how about changing the product link on the cart items to add a cart item key parameter

Then when the user clicks the item in the cart, on rendering the fields check for this parameter and populate the user’s saved values.
(Ideally change Add to Cart to Update Cart in this case as well.)
Then when user presses the button, the selected additional fields button for that cart item are updated.
