Further investigation revealed that my WordPress version was really outdated and the reason I was unaware was because the server was running an outdated version of PHP. De-activating all plugins, changing the theme to 2021 and reloading WordPress 5.7 makes no difference. I have tried to reconfigure the file permissions using FTP, but may have made the situation worse because my FTP display is slightly different to the one in the guidance notes. Enable debug and debug log, check for relevant errors in the PHP error log file.
