    Hi,

I have noticed that while adding an Irish address upon checkout that tax will not be added as the Eircode(Similar to postcode, zipcode) is optional. I haven’t noticed it for any other country. Can this be made mandatory?

    Thanks

    Hello alanfinan,

Thank you for contacting WooCommerce support.

I understand you’re noticing that tax isn’t being applied when an Irish address is entered at checkout, possibly due to the Eircode being optional.

Could you please share your site URL along with the specific address you tested? I’ll check it on my end and look into what might be causing this issue.

Looking forward to your response. 🙂

    Hi @alanfinan,

Thank you for sharing the links to your site and checkout. However, it appears the address needed to test the checkout was not included. Could you please provide an Irish address for testing? You can paste it into a private Pastebin and share the link along with the password. After we complete the test, you can delete the Pastebin.

Along with your response, please also include screenshots of your tax settings and tax classes.

    Hi @alanfinan,

I understand you’re trying to ensure taxes apply correctly for Irish addresses during checkout, and you’re seeing that when the Eircode is left out, which is optional by default, tax isn’t being applied as expected. I appreciate you sharing the address for testing.

Even without an Eircode, WooCommerce should apply taxes at checkout as long as the county is selected and matches a defined tax rate. For example, if the user selects “Co. Dublin” and you have tax defined for that region, the rate should apply automatically. Here’s a quick screenshot showing how that looks in action: https://cln.sh/NNtJ99hd5b8nSH0GbXvS

As @mosesmedh mentioned earlier, could you please share screenshots of your WooCommerce > Settings > Tax > Tax Options and your Standard Tax Rates (or any custom tax classes you’re using)? This will help us confirm if taxes are configured to rely on postcodes, which might be why tax is only added when an Eircode is filled in.

Also, in your WooCommerce > Settings > General, please make sure that the “Enable taxes” checkbox is ticked so taxes can be calculated during checkout.

Let us know once you’ve shared those details so we can dig in a bit deeper and help you resolve this!
