 * I wondered if anyone could give me some advice..
 * I would like to modify a theme and I’m not sure where to begin. I have a fairly
   good knowledge of CSS and HTML and have worked using wordpress for about 6 years.
   But I work more in design than development
 * Essentially I would like to modify this. I would like the page to contain the
   three images – a navigation bar above and a scrollable bar to the left hand side.
   I would want the images to stay fixed and the bar to scrollable or the information
   in the bar to be scrollable.
 * Could anyone let me know how they would approach this.. or point me in the direction
   of a forum that can help? I know I could pay someone else to do this but I am
   quite keen on learning how to do this myself.
 * Thanks.
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Ftheme-modification-6%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * Themes can be developed in any number of ways. There’s very little limit on what
   types of approach a developer can take. This means that it’s almost impossible
   for an outside observer to determine what sort of modifications would be possible
   and how to do them. I would suggest contacting the theme’s developer and telling
   them what you want to achieve, and if they’re responsive they might be able to
   give you an idea of what work would be required.

 * **A few ideas to get started learning:**
 * Attend local WordPress meetup
    [https://www.meetup.com/topics/wordpress/](https://www.meetup.com/topics/wordpress/)
 * Watch various WordCamp videos
    [https://wordpress.tv/category/wordcamptv/](https://wordpress.tv/category/wordcamptv/)
 * Attend a local WordCamp
    [https://central.wordcamp.org/](https://central.wordcamp.org/)
 * I am learning WordPress development using knowthecode.io —while most of the content
   is part of a paid membership program it also has some nice free resources
 * Experiment with a theme like

 * You would need to create a child theme [https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes](https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes)
 * You would then duplicate one of the theme’s template files and modify the code
   to give you the layout you want using html and css.
