 * I’ve just installed WordPress on an Ubuntu (Bitnami) server. Everything seems
to run fine except for when I attempt to install a theme or plugin.
 * When I try to install a theme or plugin it request FTP information, prior to
receiving this request WordPress was informing me that it lacked permissions
to create the folders needed. Once I changed the permission and group to what
the site is running from, it started asking me for FTP information.
 * I noticed that the created folders are not owned by the user and group that WordPress
is running from (u: bitnami, g: bitnami). The created folders are owned by Daemon.
This may be normal but I wouldn’t know. I haven’t spent a whole lot of time on
linux and how permissions are assigned.

 * Just download the theme, unzip theme and drop the folder in wp-content/themes.
   Drop unzipped plugins in wp-content/plugins.

 * Thank you for the response. I definitely will try that in order to get my themese
and plugins functional that have been giving me problems.
 * But for the sake of having a fully functional WordPress, what could be causing
   the problem?

 * The necessity for FTP details seems to depend upon the individual server setup.
Some people have the same issue on hosted, remote, sites but it’s not an indication
that there’s anything wrong with the server or the WP set-up. If you find it
annoying, you could look at [adding your FTP details to your wp-config.php file](http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#WordPress_Upgrade_Constants).
