Thumbnail position

This is an awesome plugin. A few questions, please:

How can I position the thumbnail to the left of the text, with 2-3px between the photo and the text?

How can I add some padding between the posts?

What is the excerpt picking up? Is it the first words of the post or the custom excerpt?
