 * I’ve been asked to take over two sites that were developed by someone else. That
person is no longer available to them. On first login I want to export all pages
and posts to ensure I have a full back up of those items and then do a WP backup
   as well.
 * However, the Tools function is totally missing – there’s no import or export
option there and nothing showing available tools.
 * The previous designer has totally rebranded the WordPress set up and it doesn’t
   look standard at all.
 * Is there a way to get the Tools function back into the dashboard so I can proceed
with ensuring good backups before actioning the various updates on plugins and
   other things on the site?

 * Hey,
 * You can access the export feature directly by navigating to ‘/wp-admin/export.
   php’
 * If it is a highly customized dashboard there may be a single “White Label” or
similar plugin that you can deactivate.
 * If it was removed via a function within the theme (or more appropriately a custom
plugin) you can search the functions.php for the following `remove_menu_page('
   tools.php' )` ([source](http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/remove_menu_page))
and remove the associated function and hook.

 * Thanks Josh. The export.php doesn’t work, it comes up with an error message,
   not found.
 * I’ll look through the functions.php to see what I can find.

 * Hi there! I had the same problem but I hired a programmer to fix it (by the way
it cost me a lot). That is why I would like to know how to do it myself and to
   to pay anyone. Thanks.

 * **[@l_bush](https://wordpress.org/support/users/l_bush/)**: It is considered
impolite to interrupt another poster’s ongoing thread unless you are posting
a solution or suggestion. It causes significant problems for the forum’s volunteers
and prevents us from being able to track issues by topic. Please post your own
   topic.

 * I’m back. No good. There’s no such line in the functions.php file. I’m really
stumped. I disabled the theme in the hope that it might revert to the default
but it didn’t. I have updated WordPress and other plugins but the theme, when
re-enabled, now doesn’t work. I feel like I’ve made a right royal mess of things
and will have to engage someone just as l_bush mentioned. I dread to think what
it might cost, although admittedly the client will wear most of the cost.
 * If you think of anything else, please let me know.

 * I have the same problem. My non-responsive web designer block the tools and plug-
ins on Dashboard. Could anyone help to bring the tools and plug-ins back?

 * Fortunately, I was able to run ‘/wp-admin/export.php’and’/wp-admin/plugins.php.
Maybe I have an easy fix.

 * I don’t have the ftp access to do that. I’ve had to completely rebuild the site
   on another install.
